Authorities have identified the body inside the plane wreckage found in the English Channel as that of Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala.

"Emiliano Sala arrived on the backs of the Edre in July 2015 and knew how to win the hearts of the Nantes supporters".

In a statement, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said on Wednesday that poor weather conditions led to a "difficult decision was taken to bring the overall operation to a close".

Pilot David Ibbotson on the flight of Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala had "not completely lost control", according to an aviation expert.

The Piper Malibu N264DB was en route from France to Cardiff, two days after the Argentine striker's £15m transfer to Cardiff was announced.

The body was identified later.

Hampshire Police's Football United account said on Twitter: 'Sad to say more than one arrest today of Saints fans for appalling gestures towards Cardiff fans, we will be working closely with Southampton to prevent this behaviour at football'.

The football world came together in grief and to pay its respects as the severity of the Sala story began to unfold, with floral tributes laid outside Cardiff City Stadium and vigils held in Nantes, where 42 goals in three-and-a-half seasons made him a fan favourite.

Southampton said it will investigate an incident where two fans made gestures toward Cardiff City supporters allegedly mocking Emiliano Sala.

Cardiff's win, sealed with an injury time victor by Kenneth Zohore, took them out of the relegation zone and into 15th before Burnley's win over Brighton dropped them into 16th.

The two Southampton fans are set to be banned from future home games.

'The club will be taking an extremely firm stance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified'.

Argentine footballing idols Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta also paid tribute to Sala, 28.
