Elizabeth Warren made her bid for the presidency official on Saturday in this working-class city, grounding her 2020 campaign in a populist call to fight economic inequality and build "an America that works for everyone".
The rally for Warren's announcement took place in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the site of a 1912 strike by textile workers, making it a symbolic location to launch a campaign largely focused on economic inequality.
Sounding very much like a single mother, Warren highlighted this as a major achievement - as her supporters smiled and laughed - and insisted that if she could do something like this, then anything is possible.
"Our fight is for big structural change", Warren continued.
Closing the gap between the country's rich and poor, a pursuit of Warren's that dates back to her time as a Harvard law professor, is set to be a dominant theme of her campaign. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) announced her campaign last month, while Sen. Warren took heat for not only the distant nature of her relative-by her own admission, she could be as little as 1/1,024th Native American-but also for delving into the world of race science and seemingly playing into Trump's hands.
She worked as chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel of the Troubled Asset Relief Program and was key in the conception of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), for which she served as the first Special Advisor. In all, the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination may be the most crowded field in USA history. She later apologized to the tribe's chief and reaffirmed she is not a citizen of any tribal nation.
I will always vote to reelect Warren to the Senate, but she should not be the Democratic nominee.
Warren enters a crowded presidential field, as Democrats tell pollsters they want to find the candidate most able to beat Donald Trump. Later in the week, Warren plans to visit South Carolina, Georgia, Nevada and California.
Warren has often spoken of how her parents eloped after her father's family disapproved of his future wife's Native American lineage, but Warren for years could never produce documentation to bolster her claims.
After her speech in Lawrence, Warren will head that same afternoon to an organizing event in Dover, New Hampshire. And as a senator from Vermont who won the New Hampshire primary, he would likely go into the Granite State as an early favorite if he chose to run again.
Warren's said she'd put the revenue raised by a tax on the ultra-wealthy toward programs to cut student debt and expand access to child care.
In a presidential field that's shaping up to be large, Warren's grasp of pocketbook issues that affect voters is likely to be her main strength in attracting the Democratic activist base.
