Weather extremes last year included wildfires in California and Greece, drought in South Africa, floods in India, while the new year saw Queensland and Tasmania threatened by record-breaking floods and bushfires. 2015 (2nd-warmest) and 2017 (3rd-warmest) were hotter than 2018.

The data means that the five warmest years in recorded history have been the last five, and that 18 of the 19 warmest years have occurred since 2001.

Global surface temperatures have risen by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880.

The Earth experienced its fourth-hottest year in more than 136 years in 2018.

NOAA said the average temperature for the contiguous U.S.in 2018 was 53.5 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a warmer-than-average year for the 22nd year in a row.

The data indicate that global warming shows no sign of stopping.

In addition to the loss of sea ice, ice continues to melt from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, according to Schmidt. The record data according to WMO, the year 2016 with an increase of 1.2 degrees above the pre-industrial Mediterranean. One of the report's analysts says the impact is already being felt, and various regions are suffering from intense precipitation and other climate anomalies.

A 2018 NOAA map shows where average temperatures were higher than usual.

In addition to the temperature records, the USA suffered $91 billion in direct losses from extreme weather events in 2018, the fourth most since 1980, Ardnt said.

In an independent analysis by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2018 global temperatures were 0.79 degrees Celsius above the 20th century average, marking the 42nd consecutive year since 1977 with an above-average global temperature.

Dr. Schmidt spoke of these markers not as cliffs that the world would plunge over, however, but part of a continuing slide toward increasing levels of harm. These calculations produce the global average temperature deviations from the baseline period of 1951 to 1980.

"The planet is warming".

Temperatures in both 2016 and 2015 were lifted by an El Niño, a natural event which can disrupt weather patterns worldwide every few years and releases heat from the tropical Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere. Scientists have linked climate change to more destructive hurricanes like Michael and Florence a year ago, and have found links to such phenomena as the polar vortex, which last week delivered bone-chilling blasts to the U.S. Midwest and Northeast.
