Chelsea target Mauro Icardi 'refusing to play for Inter Milan'

Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi has refused to play in his side's Europa League match against Rapid Vienna on Thursday night after being stripped of the club captaincy.

The Serie A club revealed goalkeeper Samir Handanovic as their new skipper but did not give any reasons for Icardi's removal.

That transfer did not happen as Inter rejected Arsenal's loan approach, but Nara's suggestion "personal issues" were behind the forward's desire to leave prompted the club to name Samir Handanovic as their new club captain.

This will only fuel speculations about ICARDI's exit from the club especially since he has yet to renew his contract.

Icardi, who has in the past been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United, had been involved in discussions over extending his contract with the Nerazzurri beyond 2021.

"Mauro was called up for Vienna, but he didn't want to come". It has been a tough, painful decision which he probably has not taken well, made with the team's well-being in mind.

Sources in Italy say that Icardi's team-mates no longer see him as a captain.

"I have not created any problems for Icardi", Spalletti told DAZN.

A native of Rosario, Icardi joined the club in 2013 from Sampdoria.

"I would like Mauro to be more protected by the team". Reports have suggested that the 25-year-old has been discussing a new contract with the club for months, yet no renewal has materialised as of yet.

His relationship with Inter's fans has been frosty ever since, despite his return of 122 goals in 210 games, and a poll on La Gazzetta dello Sport's website on Wednesday asking whether Inter had been right to scrap him of the captaincy saw nearly 90 percent of over 15,000 votes backing the club's stance.
