Bell Let's Talk having positive impact in C-K Still a Long Way to Go in Addressing Mental Health Needs: Advocate

He added it helps people recognize that mental health issues can be experienced, but you can still be successful.

Kyra Gillert, enrolment services co-ordinator for the Student Success Centre at the U of L, said one of Bell's main points of their campaign is that talking is one of the best ways to reduce barriers for mental health and to reduce the stigma that surrounds it.

It was back in September of 2010 when the Bell Let's Talk campaign began to ask people to have a new conversation about Canada's mental health.

Nationally recognized, on January 30 of every year, Bell Canada will donate towards Canadian mental health initiatives by contributing five cents for every applicable text, call, tweet, social media video view and use of their Facebook frame or Snapchat filter, as stated on their website.

Last year Bell Media provided $500,000 to the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal Foundation (FIUSMM) to develop apps and mobile support applications, $1 million to the Mental Health Commission of Canada to develop programs to support post-secondary students, $400,000 to the Montreal General Hospital Foundation to acquire a repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) device, and $150,000 to Ogijiita Pimatiswin Kinamatwin for Indigenous youth support services. "There's actually a lot in Medicine Hat to provide assistance to people in a crisis, or if you just need to talk to somebody". Also, the stigma attached to mental health conditions is so pervasive that people who suspect that they might have a mental health condition are unwilling to seek help for fear of what others may think.

However, Gruchy says they can also gloss over the complexities of the issue and fail to bring about the changes that are needed. They're so much more than that.

Shelby Meyer, vice president external for the Medicine Hat College Students' Association, stands next to a display for Bell Let's Talk on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019. All over Twitter, Devils players and the organization were sure to promote the hashtag #BellLetsTalk in support of ending the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Bell says that as a result, large and small institutions and organizations in every region of the country received new funding for access, care and research from Bell Let's Talk and from governments and corporations that joined the cause.

It's estimated one in five people in Canada experience some kind of mental health challenge in their lifetime.
