The man can then be heard shouting "USA" and "f*ck the media".

Mr O'Donoghue added that he had been "spat at before".

Trump saw the attack from the stage and paused to give Skeans a thumbs up and ask if everything was okay.

According to The Guardian, Ron Skeans, who was covering the Trump rally for BBC, was met by a man who had somehow gotten onto the media platform.

The BBC's Washington correspondent Gary O'Donoghue described Monday's incident as "an incredibly violent attack" in an interview with his employer.

CNN's Jim Acosta has been heckled several times at Trump rallies with supporters of the U.S. president shouting "fake news" and "go home" behind him.

Beto O'Rourke speaks to a crowd inside a ball park across the street from where President Donald Trump was holding a rally.

O'Donoghue told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "It was an incredibly violent attack".

Trump had used his rally to encourage support for his proposed border wall with Mexico, which he claims will protect the United States from violent criminals, drugs and a "tremendous onslaught" of migrant caravans.

Standing under a Finish the Wall banner, Donald Trump insisted that large portions of the project are already under construction.

Donald Trump's rise to becoming President has been marked by a hostile tone towards the vast swathes of the media, bar the outlets that support him such as the right-wing, Rupert Murdoch-owned broadcaster Fox News.

He even railed at fact checkers yesterday in a rant on Twitter, accusing them of become "fake news".

Trump's rally in El Paso was also his first direct clash with potential 2020 presidential rival Beto O'Rourke.

Mitt Romney, a senator from Utah and former Republican presidential nominee, argued past year that Trump's tactics are detrimental to democracy.

Former congressman O'Rourke accused Trump of stoking "false fears" about his hometown El Paso.

"The president could see the incident and checked with us that all was okay", the BBC said in a statement.
