Apple says Group FaceTime will be back next week, bug

FaceTime Teen Arizona teen discovers Apple FaceTime group chat flaw

Apple has apologised for the Group FaceTime bug that allowed people to eavesdrop on others' iPhones. "We are committed to improving the process by which we receive and escalate these reports, in order to get them to the right people as fast as possible", the Apple said.

The recommended way to update your devices is to tap Settings General Software Update and carry out the update from there.

In an era when technology companies are coming under increasing scrutiny for privacy violations, NY officials seized on Apple's disclosure and said they will investigate the company's failure to warn consumers about the bug and its slow response.

Apple has already put a stop to the FaceTime bug by disabling Group FaceTime server side, leaving the feature unavailable, but questions remain about how long the bug was accessible and how long Apple knew about it before attempting a fix.

Apple said it's working on improving its process for receiving and escalating tips. However, this feature will remain disabled for all iOS users not running iOS 12.1.4 or later.

Apple faced criticism for not responding to multiple bug reports for the Group FaceTime glitch sent in by Grant Thompson in Arizona, January 21 onwards, and not reacting until media reports on the flaw appeared last week.

Apple has now publicly apologized for the FaceTime bug that has been a concerning issue this week. Others are raising questions about how long it took Apple to address the bug. James said her office's review will include a "thorough investigation into Apple's response".

Following news of the eavesdropping bug this week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a consumer alert about the bug, which he described as "an egregious breach of privacy that puts New Yorkers at risk".

This confusion turned out to be a major bug in the group FaceTime software.

We have tested this method and confirmed that it works.

The Thompsons felt a reward for discovering the bug was in order or at least a thank you.

The bug was something of a rare security slip-up for Apple, leading to an equally rare apology from the company.

"It would be cool to just have Apple say thanks to me, " Grant Thompson said before Friday's announcement from Apple.

Reports of the exploit started circulating on Tuesday, though the family that initially contacted Apple reportedly reached out even earlier.
