Trump's Invite to Only Some Democrats Backfires on Him

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said instead of a bipartisan lunch, nine House Republicans are confirmed to attend.

Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., said he attended a meeting of fellow centrist Democrats on Monday night and that a handful of members, most of whom represent districts Trump carried in 2016, were invited.

House Democrats have passed a number of bills to fund the roughly one-quarter of federal operations that have been closed, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, has said the chamber will not consider legislation that Trump will not sign into law. Many inside and outside the White House hold that it may be the best option to end the budget standoff, reopening the government while allowing Trump to tell his base supporters he didn't cave on the wall.

She said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer "refuse to negotiate".

Speaking on CNBC, Delta Air Lines Inc Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian said the partial shutdown would cost the airline $25 million in lost revenue in January because fewer government contractors are travelling.

In a meeting Monday night, Pelosi and Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told fellow party leaders they were fine with rank-and-file members meeting with Trump, a source in the meeting told The Hill.

"There is definitely a sense that there is a deadline approaching, which would be next Tuesday, to make sure that we're able to solve this problem", said Mercedes Schlapp, a White House spokeswoman.

Republican Rep. Rodney Davis of IL says that "if you don't show up at the table, how are we ever going to come to a solution?"

But hopes of side deals being cut by the White House seemed unlikely, as did the prospect of groups of senators meeting privately to forge a compromise.

House Democrats have tried to pressure the Senate to take up bills funding parts of the government, to no avail.

"Hundreds of thousands of Americans aren't getting paid because the president won't give up his vanity project", said Democratic Sen.

"There was bipartisan support in the Congress for billions of dollars for physical barriers at the border before Representative Pelosi was Speaker", McConnell said.

"He just got up and said we have nothing to discuss, and he walked out", Schumer said last week.

The rebuff Tuesday showed the limits of the White House's new strategy of trying to bypass Democratic leaders to peel off Democratic support for Trump's position. Democrats have vowed to block any type of spending package that would involve funds to build a wall along the Southern border.

Asked if border security had reached crisis proportions, Baker said, "I think border security is a really important national issue and anybody who doesn't needs to talk to some of the people who deal with all the issues associated with fentanyl and drug trafficking and all the rest".

Baker said there are 47,000 federal workers who live in MA and thousands more federal contractors who are going without pay because politicians in Washington can't reach a government funding agreement.

President Trump is demanding $5.7 billion to build his border wall while Democrats are holding firm at the $1.3 billion they offered for border security.

While the shutdown hit about one-quarter of federal operations, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday found that almost four in 10 United States adults said they were either affected by the impasse or know someone who is.

"And they'll want to make a citizen's arrest", she said, the aide told ABC. "Re-open the government! #TrumpShutdown", Pelosi tweeted in response.
