That means 16.7 million faulty inflators out of 50 million under recall have yet to be fixed, so check your cars.

In February 2018, the recall of vehicles affected by the faulty Takata airbags was made compulsory under law, with affected manufacturers required to replace all defective airbags by the end of 2020. Takata used ammonium nitrate to generate an explosion to inflate the air bags, but excessive humidity and temperature changes can cause the chemical to deteriorate.

The recall involves Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles manufactured between 2003 and 2013 that are equipped with Takata front passenger airbag inflators.

USA authorities in 2014 exposed the Takata airbag defect, which has since resulted in a series of massive recalls concerning at least 100 million units worldwide from multiple manufacturers.

Automakers are adding about 10 million vehicle inflators in the United States to what was already the largest-ever recall campaign in history. The inflators can "explode with too much force and hurl shrapnel into drivers and passengers", according to the AP.

The 2010 through 2015 Scion XB also is included. In total, 19 automakers are recalling more than 100 million potentially faulty inflators worldwide.

Auto manufacturers in the United States repaired more than 7.2 million defective Takata airbag inflators in 2018 as companies ramped up efforts to track down parts in need of replacement, according to a report released last month, according to Reuters.

Safety advocates say the completion rate should be far higher given the danger associated with the inflators.

The recalls forced Takata of Japan to seek bankruptcy protection.
