An autopsy later revealed that he'd died suddenly from food poisoning caused by a bacteria called bacillus cereus.

The student, known only as AJ, became sick on October 1, 2008 when he ate leftover spaghetti with pre-made tomato sauce at his home in Brussels, Belgium.

A young student tragically died after eating a bowl of pasta that he had made nearly a week earlier.

The next morning, his concerned parents went to check on him and found him dead.

Unfortunately, an unaware AJ had been treating his symptoms like a usual bout of food poisoning, such as drinking plenty of water and not taking medication.

In a YouTube clip viewed over 1.8 million times, Dr. Bernard, who identifies himself as a licensed provider trained and based in the US, explained that the spoiled pasta had shut down A.J.'s liver.

The sudden death of a Belgium student who ate rotten pasta has made worldwide headlines after a United States professor used the case study to explain the impact of severe food poisoning on the human body.

He said: "It is important to note that this is not a typical food poisoning case".

Dr Bernard says in the video: "AJ is an otherwise healthy 20-year-old man".

It's a type of bacteria that produces toxins that can cause diarrhea and vomiting, typically lasting for about 24 hours. Which points us to the final answer of AJ's case.

It was also found that the stomach medicine AJ had taken after becoming ill had reacted with his body and damaged his liver, which was already failing due to the bacteria created by the pasta he had eaten.

'Many people eat pasta, or any other form of noodles, that are leftover for a day or two and they're fine, ' he said, 'but be careful of food left out for more than a few hours. "If the food smells amusing, it's always better to be safe than sorry", he said. Bacillus cereus is a common bacteria, popularly attributed to the so-called "fried rice syndrome", a prevalent food intoxication triggered by leaving rice-based foods at room temperature for several hours.

The video has been viewed two million times and attracted more than 16,000 comments since it was uploaded in January 21.

"That was kinda dumb but not really something you expect to kill you a day later", one person wrote on Reddit.

As scary as this story may be, it shouldn't stop you from eating leftover pasta or rice again.
