Three people were killed and almost two dozen were injured on Friday when a double-decker bus struck a bus shelter in the Canadian capital of Ottawa during rush hour, city officials said.

Three people are dead and 23 are injured after a bus smashed into a transit shelter.

The crash took place west of downtown at 3:50 p.m., just as dusk was beginning to settle on the coldest day of the winter so far in the capital. Officials say a total of 25 patients were taken to hospital, 14 in critical condition and 11 in serious condition.

"The driver of the bus, there was a requirement for us to arrest her at the scene and she's been transported at our headquarters for interviewing", said Chief Police Charles Bordeleau.

An investigation is ongoing.

A photo from the scene shows first responders aiding an injured person on the pavement in front of the double-decker bus.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Danielle Cardinal said as of 4:10 p.m. that the Transitway was closed in both directions near Westboro station. The driver was questioned by police, he said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was devastated to hear of those who were killed and injured in the bus collision.

The Canadian PressOttawa Mayor Jim Watson described the incident at Westboro station as "horrific" on Twitter.

The bus has a capacity of 90 people, both sitting and standing.
