Rosenstein has told President Donald Trump that he will leave the Justice Department after the expected confirmation of William Barr as attorney general.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is expected to resign as soon as new Attorney General William Barr is confirmed, an ABC News report claims.

Rosenstein plans to leave at some point after that, though no date has been set and there is no formal plan for the departure, according to the person, who was not authorized to discuss internal conversations publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"I know the deputy attorney general has always planned to roughly stay around two years".

Barr was nominated in December to run the Justice Department after Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned at the request of Trump, according to a letter delivered to the White House.

Rosenstein has overseen special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Trump campaign ties to Russia after Sessions recused himself from the Justice Department probe due to his own contacts with Russian officials. Barr will assume oversight of the probe once confirmed as AG.

After an embattled turn in that role, Sessions stepped down at the end of a year ago and was replaced temporarily by Matthew Whitaker as Acting Attorney General. "My guess is that he is making room for the new attorney general to build a team that he wants around him", Sanders said.

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, who Trump named in November, now has ultimate authority over Mueller and the investigation. Barr could be installed at the Justice Department as early as February.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has announced that he will be stepping down from his position shortly.

ABC News also reported that there is no indication that Trump is attempting to force out Rosenstein, despite their rocky past. But Trump opted not to replace him.
