The way it works, is that streaming service companies would hire Synamedia, which in turn uses AI, behavioral analytics and machine learning to monitor and analyse password sharing activity across user accounts.
This week at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, video software provider Synamedia revealed new technology that could help put an end to account sharing.
Streaming services such as Netflix are able to pay for access to Synamedia's initiative that will grant them the data in question.
Although Synamedia has not declared which companies are now trialling its new scheme, it already sells different services to the likes of Disney, Sky and AT&T. Synamedia won't reveal which companies are trialing its new software, although it confirmed that it is now being trialed by a "number of firms", namely one that sells other services to some big industry names, like AT&T, Comcast, Disney, Verizon and Sky.
If the platform finds out that the password has definitely been shared with several people, the account might be closed down permanently.
"Casual credentials sharing is becoming too expensive to ignore", Synamedia's Jean Marc Racine said in a statement last month.
The company is billing Credentials Sharing Insight as a new revenue-generating option for streaming service companies as it is a "way to market their service to new audiences".
'Our new solution gives operators the ability to take action. "If the latter, then subscribers are offered a premium shared account service that includes a pre-authorized level of password sharing and a higher number of concurrent users", Synamedia explained. Many casual users will be happy to pay an additional fee for a premium, shared service. Real-time dashboards will display any abnormal activity detected including alerts and trend analysis. It is already in trials with some pay-TV operators.
