Irena Ivic is a driver for the Milwaukee County Transit System.

She spotted a baby walking alone on a freeway overpass, barefoot and wearing only a onesie and a diaper in the freezing temperatures.

Bus driver Irena Ivic had started her morning just like any other when she was shocked to see the baby boy on the side of the road in Milwaukee in the USA state of Wisconsin in December.

On Thursday afternoon, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele and MCTS officials honored Ivic. Ivic stopped her bus, ran across the street, picked up the crying child and carried him to the bus.

The 19-month-old had been cold and scared but was otherwise unharmed, police said.

In the video, Ivic, a mother of two, can be heard saying, "I'm shaken".

Police say the child had been left outside by his mother who may have been suffering from a mental health crisis.

Another passenger brought her jacket up to the front of the bus to help the boy warm up.

After authorities arrived, they were able to reunite the baby with her father, Hasan Ali Abdul Kasim, FOX6 Milwaukee reported.

NOTE: Police first said the baby was a boy but later clarified that the child is actually a girl.

"She did a lot more than her job".

"If it's a sad thing that its the ninth time than an MCTS driver has had to help a lost child get back to their family it is an extraordinary thing that we have drivers like Irena who are there to do it without hesitation", Abele added.
