A US TV host who lost her chat show after suggesting it was OK for white people to wear blackface on Halloween has reached an exit deal with the network that employed her.

NBC News reported Kelly will leave the network with the remainder of her three-year, $69 million deal - about $30 million.

Exit discussions have been ongoing since October 25th, with her Today hour being cancelled the following day.

But when those stories began to fade, Kelly had trouble attracting an audience in the soft-focus world of morning television.

Megyn Kelly, a former NBC host who has parted ways with the network over her controversial blackface comments, has confirmed that viewers will see her on TV again this year.

Her tenure was also a failure for NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack, who lured her from Fox News Channel with the type of big-money contract that was once standard in television news but now is less so with financial constrictions and less viewership.

Last September, Kelly publicly contradicted part of Lack's account about why NBC opted not to air Ronan Farrow's reporting about Harvey Weinstein. "Like, back when I was a kid, that was OK as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character".

Kelly is not believed to be subject to any "noncompete" clause, which means that in theory she can join another network right away, the sources said.

By that point, there were already questions about how much longer Kelly's 9 a.m. show would last. Kelly said. "She wants to look like Diana Ross for one day".

It's not immediately clear what's next for Kelly.

Her comments that drew outrage on social media and condemnations from Kelly's colleagues at NBC, including Craig Melvin and Al Roker, and was covered by Lester Holt on NBC Nightly News. While it was reported a year ago that NBC was expected to pay out the rest of Kelly's contract in full, the two parties continued to negotiate other terms, including non-compete and non-disclosure clauses.
