ALE says each satellite will provide on-demand shooting stars service to paying customers.

Japan successfully launched on Friday morning a low-priced Epsilon rocket carrying seven satellites built by 10 organizations, including a space venture aiming to create artificial shooting stars. The second launch took place in late 2016 while the third Epsilon launch vehicle lifted off in January 2018. In creating artificial meteor showers, ALE said it intends to "bring people all over the world together to witness an unprecedented, collective experience".

The rocket carried a total of seven ultra-small satellites. The rocket also carried other six ultra-small satellites that will showcase different "innovative" technologies, JAXA spokesman Nobuyoshi Fujimoto told AFP. The satellite has 400 tiny balls whose formula has been kept under the wraps.

Earlier today, Japanese firm Astro Live Experience (ALE) launched a satellite equipped for producing the first ever artificial meteor shower. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency announced that all seven satellites were successfully launched.

That should be enough for 20-30 events, as one shower will involve up to 20 stars, according to the company.

Tinkering with the ingredients in the balls should mean that it is possible to change the colours they glow, offering the possibility of a multi-coloured flotilla of shooting stars.

The hope is to have the device, called Sky Canvas, fully functional by next year, when it plans to shower artificial meteors over Hiroshima, 75 years after America dropped atomic bombs on the city during WWII. Hiroshima is chosen as the first location because of its good weather, landscape, and cultural assets.
