Israeli scientists have revealed that they might have found the first complete cure for cancer which will be affordable, quick, and have minimal side effects.

The idea is similar to that of a Nobel Prize victor in which scientists worked on phage display in the directed evolution of new proteins in particular, to produce antibody therapeutics.

The scientists likened their treatment - called MuTaTo, for multi-target toxin - to a cancer antibiotic.

He went on: "The probability of having multiple mutations that would modify all the targeted receptors decreases dramatically with the number of targets used".

Previous antibody-based therapies only partially attacked the cancer cells and the curative effects gave way to the development of new cells, formed from the vestiges of those already attacked, or by the mutation of malignant cells that exceed the effects of treatment.

"If it does not completely annihilate the cancer, the remaining cells can start to get mutations again, and then the cancer comes back, but this time it is drug resistant", Morad said.

"Instead of attacking the receivers one at a time, we attack the receivers three at a time".

Another reason why cancer drugs fail and the disease returns is because the drugs do not destroy cancer stem cells.

There has been huge progress made in the treatment of cancer in recent years, with overall death rates declining in many countries.

He added: "My colleagues here at American Cancer Society tell me phage or peptide display techniques, while very powerful research tools for selecting high affinity binders, have had a hard road as potential drugs". Morad noted that ghastly physical side-effects of these medicines are experienced as a result of the drugs interacting with the wrong or additional targets, often wiping out healthy, non-cancerous cells.

"This should make the whole molecule non-immunogenic in most cases and would enable repeated administration of the drug", Morad said.

'We are living in an era where many exciting advances are impacting the care of patients with cancer.

Chief executive Dr Ilan Morad told the newspaper the treatment, named MuTaTo, will one day be personalised to each individual patient where specific cocktails of drugs will be administered depending on the type of cancer each patient has.

The drug has been tested in mice which has shown success and is nearing the clinical trial stage, according to Aridor.
