Israeli scientists claim they’ll offer first cure for cancer in a year

Celia Hoffman | 30 January, 2019, 04:57

United States cancer experts sounded a cautionary note Tuesday about a claim by a team of Israeli scientists that they will likely develop a cure for cancer in the next year.

Accelerated Evolution Biotechnologies chairman Dan Aridor said they hoped to be able to successfully offer a complete cure.

An AEBi spokesman acknowledged in an email to CNBC that "complete cure for cancer meaning that we will have the complete solution ready for first tryout in humans".

According to its creators, MuTaTo functions as a "cancer antibiotic", using a combination of cancer-targeting peptides (amino acid chains) and also containing a toxin that specifically kills cancer cells.

Chief executive Dr Ilan Morad told the newspaper the treatment, named MuTaTo, will one day be personalised to each individual patient where specific cocktails of drugs will be administered depending on the type of cancer each patient has.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide.

The team studied anit-cancer drugs to determine why they fail. Unlike 2018 Nobel Prize-winning scientists George Smith and Gregory Winter, who used phage display to evolve new proteins or antibodies, the Israelis are producing peptides, which Morad says are better equipped for the job because they are smaller, less expensive and less hard to manage.

"If it does not completely annihilate the cancer, the remaining cells can start to get mutations again, and then the cancer comes back, but this time it is drug resistant", said Morad.

"The probability of having multiple mutations that would modify all the targeted receptors decreases dramatically with the number of targets used", Morad continued. "Instead of attacking receptors one at a time, we attack receptors three at a time - not even cancer can mutate three receptors at the same time".

The drug has been tested in mice which has shown success and is nearing the clinical trial stage, according to Aridor.

AEBi plans to begin clinical trials which could be completed within a few years and would make the treatment available in specific cases.

He said that "more likely, this claim is yet another in a long line of spurious, irresponsible and ultimately cruel false promises for cancer patients".
