After a festive holiday season and plenty of new year's parties, and all of the alcohol millions of Americans drank throughout, some people go teetotaler for the month of January and commit to sobriety.

Generally the evidence for short term abstinence producing longer term positive behaviour is not clear'.

The area also has one the lowest populations of heavy drinkers in the country.

"If you are going to drink - and most people will - at least be moderate", said Shulman.

Instead, people should be wary of their consumption year-round, he added.

But Mr Hamilton said those who are dependent on alcohol wouldn't sign up anyway, and are at risk as there are cuts to treatment funding year on year.

"I started yesterday", said Montrealer Alex Pioli.

Thousands of people in Lincolnshire are expected to quit drinking for Dry January this year.

A team from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom studied 800 people who took part in Dry January in 2018, and found that by abstaining from booze for a month, participants regained control of their drinking, had more energy, better skin, and lost weight.

But Mr Hamilton warned it is too hard to attribute these benefits directly to giving up alcohol for a month.

Within a few weeks, she said, things tend to go back to normal.

Just four per cent of the population consume nearly a third of all the alcohol sold in England, according to data from Public Health England last January. 'It's a huge proportion of your sales.

What's more, taking part in Dry January helps us learn how to have fun without relying on booze.

The chief investigator for the study is Professor Kevin Moore, and he told The Belfast Telegraph: "Dry January makes you healthier, so it tells you that alcohol's bad for you - but if you do stop drinking, are there any long-term benefits?"

Evidence shows that in 2015, a time when the campaign was run by Alcohol Concern in alliance with Public Health England, media coverage cost over £8million. British researchers found that people who gave up drinking for the first month of 2018 reported drinking less eight months later.

Latest figures show 7,697 people died from alcohol-specific causes in the United Kingdom during 2017 - the highest number since 2008 - with deaths among women at the highest level since 2001.

Having a Dry January is a popular New Year's resolution but are Philadelphians hopping on board?
