Greenland ice melting faster than feared

Greenland's ice melting faster than scientists previously thought – study Greenland's Melting Ice Sheet Nears Tipping Point

Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels, so this research amplifies the risk to Pacific island nations and populated areas like Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro and Osaka. "But if you take ice mass off of Greenland and put it directly into the sea at a faster rate than anyone is modeling, that would imply that sea-level projections are maybe a little conservative", said Kaitlin Keegan, a Dartmouth research associate.

In a statement, he attests, "The only thing we can do is adapt and mitigate further global warming-it's too late for there to be no effect. If we lose ice mass from Greenland or Antarctica and seas rise, that will be felt globally, not just in the Arctic or the Antarctic", also said Eric Klein from the University of Alaska.

This was the year NASA and partners in Germany launched the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), involving twin satellites that measure ice loss across Greenland. Here's the manner by which it works: When the North Atlantic Oscillation is in what researchers call a "positive" phase, the skies above Greenland will, in general, be cloudy, and along these lines, don't encourage melting, Bevis said.

It was the second alarming report on the effect of climate change on sea level rise in a week.

"By limiting greenhouse gas emissions we will limit warming, and thus also limit how rapidly and intensely Greenland affects our coastal communities through sea level rise", Trusel said. "It's because the atmosphere is, at its baseline, warmer", Bevis said.

"Whatever this was, it couldn't be explained by glaciers, because there aren't many there", said Michael Bevis, lead author of the paper, Ohio Eminent Scholar and a professor of geodynamics at The Ohio State University.

The rate at which the ice is melting across the island was far from steady.

From 2003 to 2013, the NAO veered more and more negative, a trend the researchers found mapped closely to a speed-up in the amount of meltwater flowing off southwest Greenland.

Until now, most of Greenland's ice melt was observed on the ice cap, predominantly on the glaciers in the island's northwest and southeast.

Greenland has lost some 4,000 gigatons of ice since 1995, according to the researchers, making ice melt on the massive island the biggest single contributor to rising sea levels.

Greenland's ice sheet isn't just melting, however, it's melting faster than ever in light of the fact that the region has turned out to be more sensitive to regular atmosphere changes, especially an atmospheric cycle, a group of scientists detailed on January 21st in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Now, a new study shows how much global warming is pounding another area: Greenland. When these enormous storm systems find warm pockets of ocean water, they intensify rapidly, making them hard to be predicted with accuracy.

"We're going to see faster and faster sea level rise for the foreseeable future", Bevis said.

There are GPS systems in place which monitor the movements of the ice sheet around most of Greenland's perimeter, but this has not had good coverage in the southwest region of the country. Once you hit that tipping point, the only question is: "How severe does it get?"
