Almost a year ago, Google's Chrome web browser began to roll out the ability to block, or filter, ads on publisher websites in North America and Europe that don't meet the Better Ads Standards.

Google follows the "Better Ads Standards" when determining which websites to filter ads on in Chrome, which was developed by the Coalition for Better Ads.

'If you operate a website that shows ads, you should consider reviewing your site status in the Ad Experience Report, a tool that helps publishers to understand if Chrome has identified any violating ad experiences on your site, ' explains Google's Ben Galbraith for publishers looking to get ahead of the change.

There are four negative ad types on desktop (pop-up ads, auto-playing video ads with sound, prestitial ads with countdown, large sticky ads) and eight on mobile (pop-up ads, prestitial ads, ad density higher than 30 percent, flashing animated ads, auto-playing video ads with sound, postitial ads with countdown, full-screen scrollover ads, large sticky ads).

The Better Ads Standards were chosen based on the feedback of over 66,000 users around the world. Now, the Coalition is expanding - and Google is following suit by expanding the on-by-default blocker to all worldwide users later this year.

Chrome has been ostensibly blocking these "intrusive" ads for many of us since previous year, but it will start following the same behavior in the rest of the world beginning on July 9th. According to Google, two thirds of publishers whose sites were labelled as non-compliant in the past are now in good standing and less than one per cent of all of the sites it has reviewed have had their ads filtered.

Chrome has had some success with the Better Ads Standards program.

Google's ad filtering policies have been able to push publishers who were using abusive ad experiences to clean up their sites so that they are no longer failing.

Out of millions of sites reviewed to date, Google says less than 1% have had their ads filtered.
