The latest mass of hardened fat, oil, wet-wipes, condoms and other filth congealing under our fair isle was discovered lurking below the streets of Sidmouth, a charming tourist town in Devon.

In this photo released Tuesday Jan. 8, 2019, by Britain's South West Water company, showing part of a "fatberg" in the town of Sidmouth.

Fatbergs form when people put things including fats, nappies, wipes and sanitary towels down toilets, and this one will take around eight weeks to remove, according to South West Water (SWW).

In 2017, a 250-metre-long fatberg was found in sewers beneath Whitechapel, east London.

A chunk of it subsequently went on show at the Museum of London and was hailed for increasing visitor numbers.

It will take a sewer team about eight weeks to remove the massive fatberg using high-pressure jets, shovels and pickaxes.

A South West Water spokesman said fatbergs of this size are expected in cites but not in towns like Sidmouth where it is nearly unheard of.

He insisted it would not be a threat to bathers when the weather warms up: "Thankfully it has been identified in good time with no risk to bathing waters". The consequences can be significant - including sewer flooding in your own home.

Roantree implored residents, "Don't feed the fatberg". The removal, which will be carried out by workers in full breathing apparatus, is due to begin next month but could be delayed if there is heavy rain.

The fatberg was discovered during a routine check. Work to remove the blockage is set to commence on February 4.
