Elsewhere in the country, and across the entire North American continent, spectators were treated to a partial eclipse of the sun.

The path of totality spans about 70 miles (113 kilometers) and will pass through 14 states.

It promised to be the most observed and photographed eclipse in history, with many Americans staking out prime viewing spots and settling onto blankets and lawn chairs to watch, especially along the path of totality the line of deep shadow created when the sun is completely obscured except for the delicate ring of light known as the corona. The last one was in 1979, and that swept only a handful of northwestern states. This time around, the so-called path of totality measured about 70 miles (113 kilometers) wide and cut through 14 states, including parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and SC. The next time people in the USA get those bragging rights will be in January 2316, according to the American space agency.

Remember that a big part of the fun of an eclipse is how it changes everything around you, and not just the sun.

The moon has begun its journey across the sun. A lunar eclipse, by contrast, occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon.

If you have absolutely no choice but to miss the eclipse or if weather is uncooperative where you are, don't fret too badly.

If you look inside the tube at the large rectangle, "you should see a bright, white image of the sun suddenly appear at the very end of the tube", Fulco said.

You should never look directly at a partial solar eclipse, since the sun is still visible and can damage your eyes.

However, once totality has been reached you can take off the eclipse glasses!

Narrow corridor in USA experiences full eclipse while rest of N. and S. America treated to partial eclipse.
