FBI probed whether Trump was Russian agent

Amid probes White House lawyers prepare defense of Trump’s executive privilege Giuliani Thinks Trump Team Should Be Allowed to ‘Correct’ Mueller Report, Says, ‘They’re Not God’

Counterintelligence investigators were reportedly considering whether Trump's actions constituted a national security threat, an extraordinary line of inquiry against a sitting United States president.

The Times says it's unclear whether Mueller is still pursuing it. The smart bet would be that the phrase "witch hunt" and the caps-lock button would be involved.

"In the days after President Trump fired James B. Comey as F.B.I. director, law enforcement officials became so concerned by the president's behavior that they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russian Federation against American interests, according to former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation", The Times reports.

The grand jury empaneled by the special counsel has been extended for another six months, however, signaling that the probe may continue beyond the winter.

There has been no public evidence that Trump was in contact with Russian Federation during the election campaign and Trump has long denied any illicit connection. Trump also plays a central role in a separate case in NY, where prosecutors have implicated him in a crime.

An American presidential campaign chairman handing over of internal polling data to a corporate associate of a foreign power is unusual, at best.

"As far as we're concerned, everything is over", Rudolph W. Giuliani, one of Mr. Trump's attorneys and a former New York City mayor, told Reuters on Wednesday. Trump has repeatedly slammed the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt" and insisted there was "NO COLLUSION" with Russian Federation.

The reporter also clarified, as per the Times' report, that the investigation was later taken on by Mueller when he was appointed in the days following Comey's firing. "We weren't convinced they had any questions they don't know the answer to". He also says his now-former lawyer, Cohen, lied to get a lighter sentence in NY.

Neal Katyal, the former acting solicitor general under President Obama, wrote that any Trump attempts to hide parts of the report from the public would be defeated in court.

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen was sentenced last month to three years in prison for crimes including orchestrating the payments in violation of campaign finance laws.

The newspaper said it's not clear whether Mueller is still looking into that matter.
