Elon Musk's rocket company SpaceX is going to slash its almost 6,000-stong workforce by 10 percent in an effort to become "leaner", the company said in a statement cited by media.

Speaking about the employees who are being laid off, SpaceX said, "We are grateful for everything they have accomplished and their commitment to SpaceX's mission".

News of the layoff first surfaced from an email sent by SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell, who reportedly called the business move "a very hard but necessary decision".

"Either of these developments, even when attempted separately, have bankrupted other organisations".

SpaceX now launches regular supply missions to the astronauts living at the International Space Station, using its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo capsule.

It added that the trim down was "only due to the extraordinarily hard challenges ahead".

"This means we must part ways with some talented and hardworking members of our team", the statement continued.

"Starship test flight rocket just finished assembly at the @SpaceX Texas launch site". However, it has several expensive projects in the works - including a launch from California on Friday.

The email by Shotwell states the company will be offering a minimum of eight weeks pay, resume help, and job searches to the laid-off workers.

SpaceX has also embarked on a mission to beam internet services to Earth around the globe through a network of satellites dubbed Starlink, the first set of which will be deployed this year. The firings were related to disagreements over the pace at which the team was developing and testing its Starlink satellites.

According to reports on the internet, Musk said that the company should have its first orbital prototype by June this year.
