Meghan Markle, who is settling into royal life quite nicely, will be a patron of four charities in her lifelong role as Duchess of Sussex, Kensington Palace announced Thursday. The first is the royal patron of the National Theatre, and the second is the royal patron of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Kensington Palace revealed that Meghan has secretly visited Smart Works several times over the a year ago, as well as the other three organisations, and has got to know the people involved well during that time.

Meghan accepted honorary roles with the National Theatre, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Smart Works, which helps vulnerable or long-term unemployed women find jobs, and Mayhew, an animal welfare organisation.

Markle stopped by Smart Works on Thursday for her first public appearance at the organization. She has taken on more charity work on her plate since.

The Director of the National Theatre, Rufus Norris, quickly reacted to the news, thanking the Queen for "long and unwavering support and service".

In addition to these two new roles, the Duchess is also taking on two additional charities - Smart Works and Mayhew.

Meghan proudly cradled her baby bump.

Buckingham Palace said that "patronages generally reflect the interests of the member of the Royal Family involved".

In the past, Markle has worked with World Vision where she was global ambassador from 2016 to 2017. "This country is still very class-driven and there is a perception, and anything that adds to the perception that this place is not for everyone can be a downfall".

The Duchess of Sussex joked self-deprecatingly with Lady Juliet Hughes-Hallett, a former editor of Vogue UK, about the incident.

The official Kensington Palace Twitter account wrote: "The duchess is a strong believer in using the arts to bring people from different backgrounds and communities together. I very much look forward to working closely with Her Royal Highness in the years to come".
