Five cloned monkeys have been born with a host of genetic mental health conditions in a controversial experiment in China.

In the future, the team plans would focus on cloning monkey models with different brain diseases.

The clones were born at the Institute of Neuroscience at the China Academy of Sciences in Shanghai.

The present work succeeded in using fibroblasts from a young adult gene-edited donor monkey with disease phenotypes.

The scientist deliberately evaded regulation and supervision, raised his own funds and employed his own team for the gene-editing project on human embryos in "pursuit of personal fame and benefit", according to Xinhua, citing the probe.

It follows the controversy past year caused when another Chinese researcher, He Jiankui, created the world's first genetically edited babies using a similar technique.

Using genetically altered animals to study illness is nearly par-for-the-course in medical research today.

On the same day the Xinhua statement came out, the Southern University of Science and Technology in the tech metropolis of Shenzhen, the very institution that lured He Jiankui back to China from Stanford University, issued a terse statement firing He, dissolving his contract and ending all of his activities on campus.

The findings, published Thursday in the English-language journal National Science Review, were hailed as a world first by Chinese media.

Two out of the eight couples became pregnant.

He received huge backlash from his work due to the heinous ethical violations. Although this technique was managed at over 20 animal species such as cows, pigs, and dogs, were researchers failed until then to monkeys. He is brought, if he is disturbed, people with sleep disorders, Depression, Diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

"This number will be greatly reduced by the use of monkeys with uniform genetic background that reduces the noise in experimental studies", Dr Poo said, pointing to the example of testing drug efficacy before clinical trials. The step show that China's cloning program is pre-Mature.

The reconstructed egg then developed into an embryo that carries the genes of the replacement nucleus.

This is an identical copy of the original animal, flaws and all. Afterwards, fibroblasts from the donor monkey were extracted for the cloning process.

Previously, Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua were generated by using cells from an aborted fetus.

The first article describes the generation of gene-edited donor monkeys, using CRISPR-Cas9 method to edit the BMAL1 gene of in vitro fertilized monkey embryos.

Previous year in November, when the experiment came out and He announced to have created a pair of genetically-altered twins - whom he referred as "Nana" and "Lulu" - He said he was "proud" of his creation and second pregnancy was underway.

Sun said the research programme was reviewed and supervised by the institute's ethic committee in accordance with worldwide ethical standards of animal research.
