Amazon is developing its own game streaming service

Amazon's next big thing could be game streaming Amazon's next big thing could be game streaming

Now retail leviathan Amazon wants to enter the arena with its own cloud-based streaming framework that will leverage powerful servers to bring high-end gaming to all devices. Not many details about the project are currently known, though Amazon is understood to be positioning it as a direct rival to Google's Project Stream and Sony's PlayStation Now, as well as Microsoft's Project xCloud.

While most big-budget video games require users to own a gaming console or a computer to run, Amazon's reported streaming service would live on the tech giant's cloud network, freeing customers to play elaborate, robust games even on their mobile devices, the report said. Google is also working on its own version of video-game streaming service called "Google's Project stream service" which offers a convenient and easy-to-use gaming environment. It's something that makes a heck of a lot of sense for Amazon to do, given that they're the largest provider of cloud computing services in the world.

Google and Microsoft may beat Amazon to the market. Sources say, however, that it will allow gamers to stream video games over the internet. Reporters, however, have spotted job listings relevant to this effort, such as this one for a Lead Cross-Platform Game Engineer. Electronic Arts also announced a new online game development platform and streaming service called Project Atlas that is in the works. Assuming that everything goes well, it still wouldn't launch the streaming product until next year at the earliest, according to one of the Information's sources. It will be interesting to see how cloud-gaming affects traditional gaming business since the notion of continuously upgrading your console/computer seems tedious, hectic and expensive.

Amazon has yet to officially confirm the reports. A streaming service would obviate the need for storage space, since everything is rendered remotely; all you'd need is a strong broadband connection and a modest amount of cache space.
