A state of emergency was declared in Washington's Clark County and at least one case has also been confirmed in OR, and it's not out of the question that the outbreak could travel north toward the Lower Mainland.

Thirty confirmed cases have been reported in Clark, while one has been reported in King County.

The majority of those infected are children, many of whom have not been immunized against the disease, officials said.

"If the measles virus is introduced from overseas into populations that have not had the vaccination, it will spread very widely since measles is probably the most contagious virus we know", says Schaffner.

The outbreak is in an anti-vaccination hotspot near Portland, Ore., according to CBS News.

Marissa Armstrong with Clark County Public Health said people who have measles symptoms should contact their health care provider ahead of going into a clinic.

Measles is highly contagious when an infected person is in the environment. The measles vaccine is very effective. Health officials say nine more cases are suspected.

The CDC says that typically individuals get measles overseas in areas where immunization rates are low, and then spread the illness in pockets of unvaccinated people.

The health department has published a long list of places where infectious people have visited included churches, schools, hospitals, parts of Portland International Airport, an IKEA, and even a Portland Trail Blazers basketball game.

She adds that while there is now no travel advisory for Washington State, anyone heading to the area should review their immunization status to make sure they're protected.

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District has reported one local case of the highly contagious measles virus.

However, travellers to the affected communities are at potential risk of exposure to measles, because people with measles can infect others prior to the onset of symptoms like fever and rash. As many as 1 out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young children. Those people stayed home and later got ill, Armstrong said. Doctors say it's a red alert for anyone in King County who has not been vaccinated against measles. "You can feel absolutely miserable for 10 days to two weeks".
