The guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell traversed through part of Peter the Great Bay in what the U.S. refers to as a "freedom of navigation operation", according to the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet.

The US Navy sailed the guided missile destroyer USS McCampbell near contested waters in the Sea of Japan Wednesday, an action that is bound to irk Russian Federation.

A U.S. Navy destroyer sailed through waters claimed by Russian Federation in the Sea of Japan on Wednesday, challenging Moscow's ownership of the area for the first time since the end of the Cold War.

"Currently, the crew of the US McCampbell destroyer "is demonstrating" its courage at a distance of more than 400 kilometres from the territorial waters of the Russian Federation in the central part of the Sea of Japan", Konashenkov said.

"These operations demonstrate the United States will fly, sail and operate wherever global law allows", she added. "That is true in the Sea of Japan, as in other places around the globe", her statement declared, The Hill reported.

United States warships usually carries such "freedom of navigation" mission in the disputed South China Sea to challenge ownership claims by Beijing and reassure allies in the troubled region.

The McCampbell's operation comes at a time of heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington.

Relations have turned particularly sour after U.S. president Donald Trump threatened to pull out of the Soviet-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

It also comes as the United States and Russia clash over a number of issues, including accusations by Washington that Moscow has violated terms of the 1987 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), and USA complaints over recent Russian military operations near Ukraine.

He said the USA will produce, test and deploy new missiles now banned under the treaty, a move that could pave the way for a nuclear arms race.

The U.S. has also protested the Russian detention of dozens of Ukrainian sailors transiting through the Kerch Strait last month.

CNN reported that the Pentagon had asked the State Department to inform Turkey that it planned to send a warship to the Black Sea.
