Glassdoor's ranking algorithm takes into account a number of attributes from tens of thousands of employee reviews, including the company's overall rating, career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, senior management, work-life balance, the likelihood it would be recommended to a friend, and a six-month business outlook.

There were 28 tech companies that made the list overall, down from 29 a year ago.

The firm ranked second on last year's list.

Glassdoor said that it then uses its proprietary algorithm, factoring in the employer's rating based on "the quantity, quality and consistency of reviews during the eligibility timeframe".

The tech company employees, once in love with free food, flexible works hours and resort like offices, have also started looking at how much time they are giving to their office and for what.

The company, although headquartered in Boston, has more than 90 locations in 50 countries. Of late, Google employees have reportedly protested against the company over various issues, including issues related to sexual harassment at work, or the company's controversial projects such Dragonfly that is supposedly a censored version of Google search engine for China.

Professional networking platform LinkedIn was voted the sixth best place to work. It rose a number of spots from last year's ranking of 21.

Facebook's overall rating fell from 4.6 out of 5 at the end of last year to 4.5 today, which follows a year of public controversies over its handling of election meddling and for allowing data on 87 million users to be shared with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. But Amazon doesn't find a space in the Top 100, which is rather surprising for a company that is one of the biggest in the history in terms of market capitalisation. Bain & Company, Google and Apple are the only companies to make Glassdoor's list of 100 companies all 11 years.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was scheduled to testify before lawmakers on Wednesday, but the hearing is postponed due to the funeral for former President George H.W. Bush.

"Work-life balance is bad", one employee wrote in a review.

Facebook ranked top in 2018 but has since sunk to seventh spot, ahead of Google in eighth. These controversies started with the Cambridge Analytica revelations early this year but since then nearly every month there was something new.
