All top players set for Australian Open in January Australian Open considering match tiebreak in deciding sets

Serena Williams will return to the Australian Open in 2019 as she goes in search of a record-equalling 24th grand slam title.

Her participation at the Jan 14-27 Grand Slam was announced by tournament officials yesterday.

Meanwhile, in the men's outright betting, Roger Federer is around 5/1 to defend his title among the best tennis betting sites, with world number one Novak Djokovic a clear favourite at 5/4 to win the tournament for a seventh time.

Williams reached the Wimbledon and U.S. Open finals after her return a year ago but lost both, leaving her one short of Australian Margaret Court's tally of grand slam singles titles.

Having been unable to defend her title in 2018, Williams has gone straight to the head of the betting as the woman to beat in 2019, with Ladbrokes going 9/2 on her taking back the crown from last year's victor Caroline Wozniacki (12/1).

She was recently named GQ's Woman of the Year, but that honor came just two months after a controversial US Open final in which Williams lost to Naomi Osaka and criticized umpire Carlos Ramos as a "thief".

Williams is scheduled to play an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi in the final week of the year before heading to Australia to warm-up for her assault on the Melbourne Park title at the Hopman Cup in Perth.

The Australian Open will follow Wimbledon in introducing tiebreakers in the final sets of all matches, per the Times.

The preference of event chiefs is to play a "super tie-break" at 6-6, in which the victor is the first player to reach 10 points rather than the usual seven.

All four Grand Slams will have different ways of deciding final sets of matches if the Australian Open does decide to use the proposed "super tie-break".
