Emergency responders had measured her body temperature at 105.7 degrees (41 centigrade), the Post said.

The girl was flown by helicopter to an El Paso, Texas, hospital.

The girl and her father had been detained by immigration authorities on December 6 in New Mexico as part of a group of 163 people who approached U.S. agents to turn themselves in, the Post reported. They were part of a group of 163 people who surrendered to CBP agents in New Mexico after crossing a remote stretch of desert.

The Post reports that according to CBP records, she started having seizures more than eight hours later.

She had "not eaten or consumed water for several days", said a CBP statement to the Post.

Almost 150 Central American migrants seeking political asylum in the United States are detained by the Border Patrol, after entering the USA through the Rio Grande, along the border with Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua state, Mexico, on December 3, 2018. In Tucson, an ongoing lawsuit claims holding cells are filthy, extremely cold and lacking basic necessities such as blankets.

They turned themselves over to federal authorities at the end of a long journey from Central America - a trip made by thousands of migrants seeking asylum in the United States in recent months.

Most of those being held are from Central American countries like Guatemala, with many choosing to turn themselves in and then apply for asylum.

Agents in Arizona see groups of over 100 people on a regular basis, sometimes including infants and toddlers.

Arresting such groups poses logistical problems for agents who have to wait on transport vans that are equipped with baby seats to take them to processing facilities, some which are at least half an hour north of the border. A federal appeals court has temporarily blocked that ban, but on Tuesday the administration asked the supreme court to reinstate it.

Cynthia Pompa, advocacy manager for the ACLU Border Rights Center, in a statement called for "a rigorous investigation into how this tragedy happened and serious reforms to prevent future deaths".
