Six men allegedly ate a living langur monkey, an endangered species, and telecast the entire event on Facebook.

Six men have been indicted in central Vietnam for indulging in a rather unorthodox delicacy - a rare Langur monkey - which sits on the endangered species list.

One of the men said he bought the monkey for the equivalent of NZ$71.

They were finally identified and arrested Thursday, according to the report.

An inspector who was tasked with seeking out the perpetrators told AFP news that "it took time for us to figure out the suspects involved" after they had managed to evade the eye of law enforcement for a few weeks after the incident.

They've been accused of violating regulations protecting "endangered and precious animals", and copped to the offense, according to a statement posted on the Ha Tinh provincial police's website.

Leaf-eating langurs are among the most endangered primate species in the world and are only found in the northern part of Vietnam. Many people believe the animals' parts contain medical qualities and healing abilities.

The species is in such danger that authorities in the central Quang Nam province are trying to buy back acacia plantations to save them, VN Express reported.

Other endangered species that call the Southeast Asian country home are the Red River giant soft-shell turtle, snub-nosed Tonkin monkey and the Saola antelope.

The men have reportedly confessed to ignoring Vietnam's wildlife protection laws for "endangered" animals, which includes the Langur monkey.

While local and global conservation laws are in place, critics say they are not always properly enforced in Vietnam.
