Mueller's team and Democrats in Congress can fight back. Senator Susan Collins and Mitt Romney said it should not be impeded in any way.

The Mueller investigation is looking into alleged foreign government efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and includes possible links between Trump's campaign and the Russian government.

In 2017 he even used Trump's words, warning against Mueller engaging in a "witch hunt".

"Many experts view Trump's firing yesterday of Attorney Jeff Sessions as a potential obstruction of justice attempt", said organizers of the protest, including Democrats Abroad Vancouver.

Congressional Democrats, concerned about protecting Mueller, called on Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the investigation in its final but potentially explosive stages.

Her words were echoed by Democratic party Senate leader Chuck Schumer, who added: "Clearly, the president has something to hide."

NPR: "Jeff Sessions Forced Out As Attorney General After Constant Criticism From Trump" - "Jeff Sessions, the president's earliest and most fervent supporter in Congress, stepped down as attorney general Wednesday after brutal criticism from the president, bringing an abrupt end to his controversial tenure as the nation's top law enforcement officer".

Trump repeatedly lamented that he would have never selected Sessions if he had known the attorney general would recuse himself.

Trump had repeatedly criticized Sessions for recusing himself from any investigation into potential Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

In a letter, Mr Sessions said he was resigning at the president's request. Republican Senator Susan Collins of ME criticized Trump for stripping Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein of his role overseeing the probe.

"Interference with the special counsel's investigation would cause a constitutional crisis and undermine the rule of law".

"I am grateful to have served with people of your caliber and may God bless you and your families in all you do", Sessions wrote to colleagues.

He once mused about a situation in which Trump could fire Sessions and then appoint an acting attorney general who could stifle the funding of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

The special counsel has also been investigating whether Mr Comey's firing amounted to obstruction of justice.

The swift firing may have also been a way for Mr Trump to get ahead of any efforts from the newly-empowered Democrats to reopen the House intelligence committee's investigation into ties between Mr Trump's campaign team and Russian Federation.

Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller and has overseen his probe from the beginning will stay in his post, according to the official.
