The White House's move followed a heated exchange between Trump and Acosta who refused the President's orders to sit down and clung to the microphone and persisted with questions about his views on a caravan of Central American migrants making its way to the USA border.

CNN said Wednesday night that Acosta's suspension "was done in retaliation for his challenging questions at today's press conference" and claimed Sanders "lied" in her explanation of what unraveled.

Fellow journalists and members of the White House press corps came to the immediate defense of CNN's Jim Acosta on Wednesday after the Trump administration revoked his press credentials.

Video footage and photographs showed the intern grazing Acosta's arm in trying to pry the microphone away, and briefly making contact with the hand holding the microphone. "We will not tolerate the inappropriate behavior clearly documented in this video".

He then lampooned Acosta for the way in which he has questions White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in press briefings.

Mr Acosta called Ms Sanders' assertion that he placed his hands on the woman "a lie".

Acosta told Trump that he disagreed with the president characterizing the migrant caravan heading through Mexico the United States as "an invasion".

Mr Acosta questioned Mr Trump's reference to the caravan as an invasion, and Mr Trump defended the term. Trump told Acosta that he should "let me run the country" and Acosta should "run CNN".

"They are not only risky, they are disturbingly un-American", the network said.

Later, via Twitter, she said that she has interviewed white nationalists who say they are more excited by Mr Trump than they have been about other presidents.

She added, "President Trump has given the press more access than any President in history".

Stirewalt said that either way, the episode hurts the political discourse as the Acosta-Trump feud overshadowed "a bunch of good questions" from reporters like Fox News' John Roberts and CBS News' Major Garrett. You run CNN. And if you did it well, your ratings would be much better.'12.

Mr Trump took the rare step of mocking Republican candidates who kept their distance from him during the campaign because of concerns that his divisive messages on immigration would turn off voters - but lost anyway.

During the news conference, President Trump said Republicans "defied history" to make Senate gains in the USA midterms.

He also posted a tweet saying he was stopped by the Secret Service from entering White House grounds.

Acosta said he learned that his access was withdrawn from a text message on his phone.

As Acosta tried to ask further questions, the POTUS insisted: "That's enough!"

There is no news as to when Mr Acosta could receive his pass for White House duties once again.
