That’s why adults need to suck a pacifier

Baby pacifier A study found that the children of mothers who sucked on their pacifiers in order to clean them had a lower allergic response

In the more recent study, researchers collected maternal-child pairs who were identified in the Microbes, Allergy, Asthma and Pets cohort (N=141), and investigated whether pacifier cleaning methods reported at 6-months of age were associated with differences in serum total IgE over the first 18 months of life. But the emerging theories about microbes and allergy prevention are enough to suggest that, at the very least, it's OK for parents to feel less guilty about our occasionally less-than-sterile habits or not encasing our children in sanitized plastic bubbles. Nearly three-fifths (58 per cent) reported their child regularly using a dummy.

That's according to a new study, which has yet to be peer reviewed, from the Henry Ford Health System in MI. "It is unclear whether the lower IgE production seen among these children continues into later years", Zoratti said in an ACAAI news release.

"We interviewed mothers of infants multiple times over a period of 18 months and asked how they cleaned their child's".

Only a small percentage of moms sucked on the pacifiers to clean them - but the babies of those who did had lower levels of IgE when doctors tested their blood after 10 months, according to the site. The conclusion seems to be supported by a previous study published in 2013 by Swedish researchers, who likewise found an association between parents sucking on their baby's pacifiers and a reduced risk of allergy development.

Parents could help to prevent their child from developing allergies by sucking on their baby's dummy, scientists have claimed.

"Parental pacifier sucking may be an example of a way parents may transfer healthy microorganisms to their young children", she said.

Dr Abou-Jaoude said that while it indicated an association between parental pacifier sucking and children with lower IgE levels, it does not necessarily mean the practice itself causes the lower levels. More research is needed to examine that potential correlation, Dr. Abou-Jaoude says.

"Based on these levels, you can't really tell what's going to happen to these kids in the future", Abou-Jaoude said, according to CNN.

"Parental pacifier sucking" is linked to a lower allergic response in kids.

More than half (58%) said their child now uses a dummy, and 12% of those parents said they sucked the dummy to clean it.

They found a "significantly lower IgE level for babies at 18 months" whose mothers sucked on the pacifier to clean it.

Still, there are more practical - and perhaps more pleasant - ways to prevent allergies in children.
