Seconds before the incident, the passengers had left a restaurant on the building's dizzying 95th floor and entered the lift, when one of the cables malfunctioned and the vehicle fell at a hair-raising speed.

"At the beginning, I believed we were going to die", Jamie Montemayor, who was visiting Chicago from Mexico City, told CBS. "We were going down, and then I felt that we were falling down, and then I heard a noise: clack clack clack clack" - the sound of getting trapped in an elevator. It whizzed past all the usual stops, falling and falling and falling 84 floors before coming to an abrupt stop somewhere between the 11th and the 12th. 'The only other way to get to the elevator would have been ropes from the 97th floor, and that would not be safe.

After the elevator stopped, dust began to seep in.

They pressed the emergency button. Other cables were still attached, keeping the elevator from plummeting to the floor.

The rescue itself would take another several hours, the Chicago Tribune reported, as the auto was in a "blind shaft" for express elevators with few access points from outside that firefighters could use to even locate where it eventually stopped. "We couldn't do an elevator-to-elevator rescue".

It later emerged that one of the hoist ropes of the elevator had broken-even though, according to CBS Chicago, the elevator had passed its annual inspection in July.

The fire department was called and the elevator was discovered hanging at the 11th floor.

The firefighters drilled a 5-by-5-foot hole through a wall in the building's parking garage.

"They couldn't find us", one student said.

"We don't come down like Batman, so we must go through the wall", Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford told the Chicago Tribune.

"When they opened the door, the feeling was, 'Thanks, bud!'" Jaime Montemayor said, according to The Chicago Tribune.

A lift in a landmark Chicago skyscraper at 75 North Michigan Avenue dived 84 floors before abruptly stopping just 11 or 12 storeys from the ground, thereby ensuring the safety of 6 people, including a pregnant woman, trapped inside it.
