In theory, exposure to the peptides over time could help reprogram immune cells called T cells to become tolerant of gluten and no longer trigger an immune response to the substance, according to ImmusanT.

Those that suffer from Celiac disease may be able to start eating gluten again thanks to an experimental vaccine.

Doctors say the vaccine is designated to target 90% of celiac patients with the HLA-DQ2 genetic form of the disease. The condition affects about 1 out of every 100 people in the United States.

A phase 2 clinical trial typically lasts around two years.

If it is approved, Nexvax2 could give hope to the almost 1 percent of Americans who have celiac disease and now have no treatment option other than following a strict gluten-free diet.

"Inadvertent gluten exposures can cause significant and long-term negative impacts on patient health".

A few other people who are living with the disease told Valley News Live the same thing. In this case, the small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten, which is a combination of proteins found in wheat, barley and rye. This response causes damage to the small intestine and when this happens, nutrients can not be adsorbed properly into the body. And it is not confirmed that gluten is the culprit triggering the immune reaction in these people - it may be another protein or antigen. Other symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, bone or joint pain and chronic fatigue. You should always consult a physician to ensure proper diagnosis.

Beyond Celiac, an advocacy group for those with the disease, called the vaccine "promising", in a blog post. If the screening test is positive then, a biopsy of your small intestine is recommended for confirmation of the disease.

There is a difference between celiac disease (CD) and gluten intolerance.

But if this phase passes, doctors say it'll be a total game-changer for people who are living with celiac disease.

ImmusanT, the makers of Nexvax2, announced they've started phase-two clinical trials for the vaccine, which is created to protect people with celiac disease from inadvertent gluten exposure and, ultimately, could "allow patients to return to an unrestricted diet", ImmusanT CEO Leslie Williams said in a release about the clinical trials.
