Robert O'Neill, who was part of the SEAL TEAM 6 night-time raid that killed bin Laden and wrote in his book about firing the final shots, responded after Trump dismissed Navy Admiral Bill McRaven, who ran special operations command during the raid, as a "Clinton backer" and an 'Obama backer'.

Mr Trump's accusations are his second outspoken attack on Pakistan this year and came weeks after senior U.S. envoys visited to say they wanted to reset relations.

President Donald Trump on Sunday defended his administration's decision to stop hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Pakistan, saying the country does not do "a damn thing" for the US.

"Frankly, wouldn't it have been nice if we got Osama bin Laden a lot sooner than that?", Trump said in a "Fox News Sunday" interview. We paid Pakistan Billions of Dollars & they never told us he was living there. I ended it because they don't do anything for us. "You know, living - think of this - living in Pakistan, beautifully in Pakistan", said Trump, who took a medical deferment for a bone spur to get out of serving during the Vietnam War. The minister, known to be a hawk, in a series of tweets said that whether China or Iran, US policies of "containment and isolation" do not coincide with Pakistan's strategic interests.

"Record needs to be put straight on Mr Trump's tirade against Pakistan: 1".

A recent study by Brown University estimated that more than 23,000 Pakistani civilians and almost 9,000 security forces have been killed in the War on Terror since the 9/11 attacks in September 2001.

United States officials accuse Pakistan of continuing to provide a safe haven to Taliban forces fighting the US-backed government in Afghanistan, and harbouring close links with the Haqqani militant network. Trump added that Pakistan was another country that takes "from the United States without giving anything in return" and promised that the time when taking such an approach was possible had come to an end.

Trump slammed McRaven as a "Hilary Clinton backer and an Obama backer". "Now we will do what is best for our people & our interests".

In September, Trump chose to cut off $300 million in us aid to Pakistan, accusing the country of providing a safe haven for terrorists.

In his earlier tweets in response to Trump's interview, the prime minister gave examples to the U.S. president, saying the "record needs to be put straight on Mr Trump's tirade against Pakistan".

Pakistan rejects allegations it is not doing enough to fight terrorism and that it provides safe havens for militants operating in Afghanistan.

The entire brouhaha with McRaven and bin Laden was sparked when Wallace asked Trump to defend his attacks on the media.

Trump also added that the USA used to give Pakistan $1.3 billion a year, but doesn't anymore.
