LGBT Native American Sharice Davids wins Kansas race

Deb Haaland makes history Becomes first Native American woman to serve in Congress New Mexico
Jeannette Daniel | 08 November, 2018, 03:47

But the fact that multiple Native American women succeeded at the polls is especially monumental considering our people weren't even given full legal protection of our voting rights until less than 60 years ago.

They include Native Americans, Muslims, Latinos, immigrants, young women, and LGBT candidates. They were granted the right to vote in 1962, almost 40 years after they were granted citizenship. With more than 90 women elected to the House as of early Wednesday morning, this election led to more women winning House seats than in any election in American history. And although she has some age on Ocasio-Cortez - she's turning 30 in December - Finkenauer is still one of the youngest people ever elected to the House.

Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland who are Democrats will take oath to become the first Native American women ever to be elected to office.

Haaland ran on a progressive platform and has campaigned for Medicare for all, a $15 minimum wage, and the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

Sharice Davids has won the race for Kansas' 3rd congressional district against incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder, making history. He won his last four outings by double-digit margins.

Davids is an attorney and former MMA fighter. Add to their wins those of down-ballot candidates such as Peggy Flanagan (White Earth Nation Band of Ojibwe, elected lieutenant governor of Minnesota) and Debra Lekanoff (Alaska Native, elected to Washington state's House of Representatives), and we have even more cause for celebration.

Rashida Tlaib was born to a family of Palestinian immigrants in Detroit.

Ayanna Pressley will become the first black member of the House from MA.

In a win for the Republicans, Tennessee's Marsha Blackburn has become the first female senator in the state.

Pressley was the first black woman on Boston's City Council, and she defeated 10-term incumbent Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary. Ironically, Blackburn rose to wider attention when pop star Taylor Swift broke her political silence and encouraged fans to support Democratic challenger Phil Bredesen.
