SOUTH African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent messages of condolence to the people and Government of Zimbabwe following a deadly head on collision of buses that claimed 47 lives.

Forty-seven people were killed in Zimbabwe on Wednesday when two buses collided on a road between the capital Harare and the southeastern town of Rusape, police said.

A district commissioner has since confirmed with state-media that the main mortuary in the area had been overwhelmed by the incident and that authorities had called for private assistance.

"I can confirm that so far 47 are dead and police are still attending to the scene", Nyathi said.

"The accident occurred at around 7pm close to the toll-gate as we approach Rusape".

"The accident occurred at the 166km peg on the Harare-Mutare Road, just after the Rusape tollgate drifting towards Harare", said Asst Comm Nyathi.

"This is horrific", said Mr Museka, who was coordinating the transportation of the bodies and the injured to hospital. "I can not say much as I am running around following this tragedy".

When The Herald crew arrived at the scene, the road had been rendered impassable with bodies, the injured and their luggage strewn all over the place.

Well wishers could be seen helping ferry the injured to hospital.

One of the buses was trying to get around two trucks on a stretch of road where passing is prohibited, said Ellen Gwaradzimba, the minister for Manicaland province, in an interview with Zimbabwe's state broadcaster.
