The latest reCAPTCHA version, reCAPTCHA v3, will change the way websites test human vs bot activities. Each user will receive this tag (it's all happening behind the scenes, of course) that will be tracked throughout the site, registering the actions taken by the user and based on the displayed behavior reCAPTCHA will assign a value between 0 and 1 (1 being highest probability the user is a human, 0 being a bot) for each visitor. Gone are the days of reCAPTCHA v1 when everyone was trying to decipher in garbled text, and gone are the days of v2 when everyone was getting annoyed at clicking on endless image streams of "store fronts", "roads", and "cars" for up to 2-3 minutes.

Google this week announced an update to reCAPTCHA, a free service that protects websites from spam and abuse. Google added signals to the second version of the test which made about half of the users pass without having to enter a captcha.

Because it is score-based and doesn't rely on barriers to tell humans from bots, using it across multiple pages shouldn't harm a site's conversion rate when attempting to sign up new subscribers.

This in turn will allow owners to see what precise pages have been targeted by bots and assess how suspicious the traffic on those pages was.

The advantage of using scores is that site owners can now use that information to select what obstacles they want to put up rather than having Google select the action for them as was the case with v2.

It will provide the site owners a score between 0 to 1 to decide the suspiciousness of an interaction. This score can be used to set a threshold to determine whether a user is let through or if further verification is needed.

Google has introduced a new version of its reCAPTCHA verification tool to detect abusive traffic on websites without user interaction.

But Google says these "action" tags can also be used with a local site's internal data, such as profile or transaction histories, as an alternative user validation system. In reCAPTCHA v3, Google is also introducing a new concept called "Action". Additionally, you can use the reCAPTCHA score as one of the signals to train your machine learning model to fight abuse. Wei Liu, Google Product Manager, explains in the blog post, "The reCAPTCHA adaptive risk analysis engine can identify the pattern of attackers more accurately by looking at the activities across different pages on your website".
