Five new medical technology centres are set to open in the United Kingdom next year which will use artificial intelligence to speed up disease diagnosis.

According to the United Kingdom government, the products developed at the new centres will provide more personalised treatment for patients while freeing up doctors to spend more time on frontline care.

Scotland is to get its own £15.8m artificial intelligence (AI) health research centre.

The centre's work will deliver significant benefits for patients through the development of solutions for more rapid treatment for stroke; expert chest x-ray reading; rapid and more accurate diagnosis in gynaecological disease and colon cancer; and partly automated mammogram analysis for breast cancer screening.

iCAIRD will be a Scottish centre of excellence and focus on the application of AI in digital diagnostics, ultimately enabling better and earlier diagnosis and more efficient treatment for patients.

The technology will be used at the centres to digitise images taken during scans and biopsies as well as develop products that can help increase the rate of early diagnosis. They will be spearheaded by some of the UK's leading healthcare companies including GE Healthcare, Siemens, and Philips.

Business secretary Greg Clark said: "AI has the potential to revolutionise healthcare and improve lives for the better".

He said it was part of the long-term plan to transform the NHS into "an ecosystem of enterprise and innovation that allows technology to flourish and evolve".

Products created at the new centres will offer more personalised treatment for patients whilst also having the aim to free up doctors to spend more time caring for patients, and investment in large-scale genomics and image analysis will drive new understanding of how complex diseases develop.

The centres will be based at universities and NHS facilities and will open in 2019.

I-CAIRD (Industrial Centre for AI Research in Digital Diagnostics), Glasgow: this centre will bring together clinicians, health planners, and industry to work with innovative SMEs to answer clinical questions, and to quickly and efficiently solve healthcare challenges.

Coventry's Pathology image data Lake for Analytics, Knowledge and Education (PathLAKE) will use NHS pathology data to drive economic growth in health-related AI.

Dr Yvette Oade, chief medical officer at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said it was a "huge opportunity" for Yorkshire to become a leader in medical use of AI, adding: "This is a really exciting step for patients because computers using artificial intelligence can be trained to recognise the patterns of disease".
