Dems gain House; GOP retains Senate

But blue-collar voters and rural America embraced his aggressive talk and stances.

But the Democrats' edge is narrow. So Democrats needed to pick up 11 additional seats to take back control, which they last held in 2013-14.

Trump had noted the energy as he wrapped up a punishing schedule of rallies around the country that were meant to boost Republican candidates - and his own brand heading towards reelection in 2020. He lauded his party for winning at least half the 10 seats they were defending in states Trump carried and preventing Republicans from capturing a filibuster-proof majority.

A Democratic majority in the House would break the GOP's monopoly on power in Washington and give the party a check on Trump's agenda.

He seized on scenes of a caravan of Central American migrants heading through Mexico for the U.S., mused on ending the constitutional guarantee of citizenship to all people born in the United States and ran a television advertisement, deemed too provocative to air by mainstream networks, that linked Democrats to a criminal who was an undocumented immigrant. It wasn't clear what "leaks" he was referring to.

According to Michael McDonald of U.S. Election Project - which tracks election turnout - 38.8 million Americans cast their ballots ahead of the Election Day, surpassing the 27.4 million in the 2014 midterms.

Trump's Republican coalition is increasingly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree.

Even passing many bills will be hard for the Senate.

Brown handily defeated fourth-term Rep. Jim Renacci, who dropped a governor's bid to run for Senate at Trump's urging.

Among the new faces are Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI, the first two Muslim women elected to Congress; and Sharice Davids of Kansas, the first Native American woman to win a House seat.

There are indications that a "blue wave" may help Democrats seize control of at least one chamber of Congress. An open seat that included Atlantic City was also ripe for Democratic pickup by state lawmaker Jeff Van Drew after the GOP campaign committee abandoned Republican Seth Grossman over racially charged comments. Democrats won seats stretching from suburban Washington, New York and Philadelphia to outside Miami, Chicago and Denver.

True to form, both sides declared victory.

The results were more mixed deeper into Trump country.

Democrats failed to defeat a vulnerable incumbent in Kentucky, where Republican Rep. Andy Barr won over former Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath.

The GOP Senate victory was magnified because Democrats stood a solid chance of wresting control of the House from Republicans.

USA stocks opened flat on Tuesday as investors awaited the election results.

Since 1952, the party of the sitting president has lost an average of 17 Minnesota House seats in midterm elections.

Some hurt worse than others.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to VoteCast, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good.

Trump said in an interview with Sinclair Broadcasting on Monday that he wished he had a softer tone during his first two years in office - even as he continued his relentless attacks on political rivals.

The president bet big on a xenophobic closing message, warning of an immigrant "invasion" that promised to spread violent crime and drugs across the nation. Several television networks, including the president's favorite Fox News Channel, yanked a Trump campaign advertisement off the air on the eve of the election, determining that its portrayal of a murderous immigrant went too far.

The president found partial success despite his current job approval, set at 40 percent by Gallup, the lowest at this point of any first-term president in the modern era. This will leave President Trump unable to pass key laws through the houses.

Meanwhile, the close of the 2018 midterm season marked the unofficial opening of the next presidential contest.

Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of MA easily won re-election as they consider bids for the Democratic presidential nomination. Cory Booker, California Sen.

"The 'resistance, ' they call it", Richard Milner, 66, a boat inspector from Norfolk, Virginia, said of Trump's opponents.
