Democrats signal they want to investigate Jeff Sessions' ouster and replacement

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions Says Resigning At Trump's Request U.S. Attorney General Sessions Resigns, Throwing Doubt On Russia Probe

Organizers are calling for protests across the United States on Thursday in response to President Donald Trump's move to oust Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replace him with someone who has been publicly critical of the investigation into Russian election interference and possible obstruction of justice by the president.

Whitaker, a former US attorney from Iowa who twice ran unsuccessfully for statewide office and founded a law firm with other Republican Party activists, once opined about a scenario in which Trump could fire Sessions and then appoint an acting attorney general who could stifle the funding of Mueller's probe. President Trump forced Sessions out as the nation's chief law enforcement officer on Wednesday, one day after Democrats captured the House in the midterm elections.

Whitaker has, however, argued for limitations on the investigation. He wrote past year on CNN.com that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should limit the scope of Mueller's investigation to stop him from delving into Trump's finances.

The Justice Department did not directly answer whether Whitaker would assume control of Mueller's investigation, with spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores saying he would be "in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice".

Nancy Pelosi, who leads Democrats in the House of Representatives, called the decision a "blatant attempt" to end or impede the investigation.

Mr Sessions resigned at the request of the president. "We will be holding people accountable", he tweeted. If Mr Mueller files a report detailing his conclusions, the new acting attorney general could keep the document from ever becoming public.

Top Democrats on multiple committees wrote to key Trump administration officials Wednesday night informing them that committees will be investigating Sessions' departure.

That is true with the Mueller investigation, and I think in terms of the prior comments of Mr. Whitaker, they need to be examined, and then there's a process within the Justice Department, with consultation with the ethics officials, to see whether or not it requires recusals.

The special counsel regulation under which Mr Mueller was appointed gives the attorney general or acting attorney general authority to fire Mueller only for "good cause", such as misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity or conflict of interest.

On the very morning after Kobach lost his bid for the Governor's Mansion, a new job opening has some people thinking Kobach may get a spot in President Trump's Cabinet - and it may not take much more than two seconds.

"I could fire everybody right now, but I don't want to stop it because, politically, I don't like stopping it". Or by people who have nothing to do with the Russian Federation investigation, said Mr Ohlin.
