On Tuesday, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and the China Chamber of International Commerce (CCOIC) held a Reinvented Toilet Expo in China that showcased innovative sanitation products.

There are multiple designs of the new toilet, but all work by separating liquid and solid waste.

"Thanks to the new type of toilets, the waste will not be allowed to enter drains".

He compared the change from traditional toilets to waterless models as similar to developments in computing around the time he founded Microsoft in the mid-1970s.

According to Gates, exposure to waste causes "diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid that kill almost 500,000 children each year" and billions across the globe don't have access to the type of sanitation facilities we consider routine in America.

Bill Gates praised the free trade system for making toilet technology possible.

"In places without sanitation you have got way more than that", Mr Gates said, pointing to the faeces inside the clear canister resting on a table.

"In the way that a personal computer is sort of self contained, not a big thing, we can do this chemical processing at the household level", he said.

He showed the audience a jar of human excrement and explained that such a standard amount of feces contains 200 trillion rotaviruses 20 billion bacteria Shigella and 100 000 eggs of parasitic worms.

Gates said he brought it out to draw attention to an issue that kills more than 500,000 people every year.

There were over a dozen different redesigned toilets on display at the expo and Gates hopes that some of these will eventually prove not just useful and affordable but profitable, with reinvented toilet technology being a $6 billion global market by 2030.

Gates was at the three-day event to support Chinese leader Xi Jinping and his "toilet revolution", which has become a priority across the country.

That comes as US president Donald Trump considers cutting foreign aid amid a wider push to pull back from foreign commitments - an area which has contributed to Sino-US trade tension.

On his trip, Mr Gates also appeared at the First China International Import Expo in Shanghai, at a time of tension between the United States and China. 'It's not a huge part of the budget but the impact is enormous, ' he said.
