Sessions wrote in his resignation letter that he stepped down at Trump's request.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder said on Twitter he worries Session's exit could negatively impact Robert Mueller's investigation.

The US attorney general, Jeff Sessions, said he was resigning Wednesday at the request of President Donald Trump in a move that raises questions over the future of a bombshell probe into the president's alleged collusion with Russian Federation.

Despite the tension with the White House, Sessions had described the position of top law enforcement officer as his dream job and he pursued his conservative agenda with gusto.

Sessions received the request to resign from Kelly, not the President, on Wednesday morning, an administration official said. Trump belittled Sessions but, perhaps following the advice of aides, held off on firing him. Previously he was a conservative legal commentator who was critical of the scope of Mueller's probe. "He will serve our Country well", Trump wrote on Twitter. "If Mueller is indeed going down this path, Rosenstein should act to ensure the investigation is within its jurisdiction and within the authority of the original directive".

An element of Mr Mueller's investigation includes whether Trump or anyone in the campaign tried to obstruct justice. "A permanent replacement will be named at a later date", Trump said.

Matthew Whitaker was named acting attorney general on November 7, 2018.

The move is an abrupt end to what had been a tumultuous tenure for Sessions, originally one of Trump's earliest and most loyal surrogates as an Alabama Republican senator.

Trump forced Jeff Sessions out as attorney general on Wednesday after the midterm elections.

For more than a year, Trump repeatedly criticized Sessions over his recusal, saying he wouldn't have selected Sessions for the attorney general role if he'd known Sessions would ultimately recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe.

It appeared to be part of a summer 2017 campaign by Whitaker - then reportedly on the shortlist to replace Don McGahn as White House counsel - to portray himself as a hardliner on the Mueller probe.
