Hurricane Michael claimed its first life after roaring ashore in Florida on Wednesday, flooding homes and streets and toppling trees and power lines in the Gulf of Mexico beachfront area where it made landfall as a raging Category 4 storm. In the D.C. area, its effects are a couple days off and should be limited.

Forecasters expect Michael to be the strongest storm to hit the area in more than a decade.

More than 40 percent of daily crude oil production and more than one-third of natural gas output was lost from offshore US Gulf of Mexico wells on Wednesday because of platform evacuations and shut-ins caused by Michael.

Michael, which had caught many by surprise with its rapid intensification as it churned north over the Gulf of Mexico, was the most powerful storm ever recorded to hit the Panhandle.

Residents of Georgia and Alabama have been hit with power blackouts after the hurricane crossed into the southeastern part of the states.

More than 490,402 people are without power in Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

The storm is also expected to batter North and SC both still recovering from Hurricane Florence, which left dozens dead and caused billions of dollars in damage last month.

Hours earlier, meteorologists watched satellite imagery in complete awe as the storm intensified.

"It feels like a nightmare", she said."Looking at the pictures, I'm thinking there is not a house left in that town".

"We haven't seen her since the tree hit the den".

The hurricane is 90 miles south-west of Panama City as of 8am eastern time.

Briefing US President Donald Trump at the White House, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Brock Long said Michael was the most intense hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle since 1851.

A lot to talk about this morning from rain here returning, a sharp change in our temperatures and hurricane Michael as a category 4 bearing down on Florida! After ravaging the Keys, the storm moved north off the western coast of Florida before turning inland.

Colorado State University hurricane expert Phil Klotzbach said in an email: "I really fear for what things are going to look like there tomorrow at this time".

The storm is likely to fire up the debate over global warming.

As the hurricane moves out of Florida, Scott warned that flash floods and tornadoes are still possibilities and said "the weather is still extremely risky". But without extensive study, they can not directly link a single weather event to the changing climate. Just as Northern politicians are judged on how they handle snowstorms, their Southern counterparts are watched closely for how they deal with hurricanes.

"Going back through records to 1851 we can't find another Cat 4 in this area, so this is unfortunately a historical and incredibly risky and life-threatening situation", he said.

Only a skeleton staff remains at the home of the 325th Fighter Wing after the base's aircraft, which include F-11 Raptors, were flown hundreds of kilometres away as a precaution.

A resident of St. Marks, Fla., rescues a cooler out of the floodwaters near his home on Wednesday.

Her biggest worry: finding her missing one-year-old Siamese cat, Molly.

"We just finished renovating and updating", she said.

"I can not disappoint the thousands of people that are there - and the thousands that are going", he tweeted.
