Tetris World Championship won by 16-year old Joseph Saelee

Tetris on NES was released in 1989 and the game is nearly twice as old as it's current champion, 16-year-old Joseph Saelee from California. There have been eight CTWC events in the past and Joseph Neubauer has won seven of them.

Posting on Twitter, the Tetris Championship pointed out a fun fact about the new world champ, which will make you feel incredibly old and unaccomplished.

Before facing off against Neubauer, Saelee knocked out Japanese grand master Koryan, in an equally tense semi-finals bout. Neubauer missed out on the top spot in 2014 when he came second to Harry Kong, the first ever person to reach the maximum score of 999,999 in NES Tetris.

Saelee learned about the game by watching YouTube videos and had only been playing Tetris for about a year when he entered the World Championships and ran through the competition, making the finals.

Players bring their own standard unmodified NES controllers, and can often use a technique called "hypertapping", which the publisher explains as tapping the D-pad constantly instead of holding it down.

Neubauer fell behind 0-2 in the series, and although he was 110,000 points ahead in the third game, Saelee was able to surpass his lead and win the title.

Sickeningly for most of us, this means that Saelee has just become the world champion of a game released 13 years before he was even born, and he certainly took the crown in style.
